Virginia Engel is a founding member of Peacock Linder & Halt LLP, a firm established to service the litigation needs of the Calgary legal and business communities. Ms. Engel practices in the area of commercial litigation, professional negligence defence, tax litigation, insurance defence litigation and directors and officers negligence.

 

She is the recipient of many awards from her peers and received her Queen’s Counsel designation in 2002. In addition, she is the recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal (2003) in recognition of her distinguished service to fellow citizens and the legal community of Canada and the Louis St. Laurent Award (2008), recognizing her distinguished and exceptional service to the Canadian Bar Association.

 

Recently she was recognized by the Women of Influence as an outstanding senior executive (2011), by the Women in Law Leadership as an outstanding mentor and leader to women in the legal profession (2011) and was one a very few Canadian women lawyers to receive the L’Expert 2013 Zenith Award. In addition, she is an invited fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, Member of the Diversity Law Institute and member of the Trial Law Institute. She has been consistently recognized as one of the best lawyers in corporate and commercial litigation and legal malpractice by Best Lawyers, including lawyer of the year in Calgary for legal malpractice.

 

In addition to her busy legal practice, she is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors corporate directors program and continues to serve as a Director on several not for profit organizations including the Canadian Bar Association Financial (Chair). She was the president of the CBA-Alberta in 2001- 2002, Chair of Canadian Bar Insurance Association (2009-2011) and is a founding member of the Association of Women lawyers. In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, running and golfing.
